Section 2: Weather Forecasts
Understanding and predicting the weather is an important part of atmospheric science. A meteorologist is a scientist who studies the causes of weather and works to predict future weather conditions. To make these predictions, meteorologists collect and analyze large amounts of data using maps, charts, and computer models. This information allows them to prepare weather forecasts, which help people plan for upcoming weather.
One important tool used by meteorologists is a weather map, which provides a snapshot of atmospheric conditions over a large area at a specific time. Data from weather stations across the country are collected and combined to create these maps. Weather maps use standard symbols to display information such as temperature, precipitation, air pressure, and the location of weather fronts. The data shown on these maps comes from different types of observations. A surface report describes weather measurements taken at Earth’s surface, while an upper-air report provides information about wind, temperature, and humidity higher in the atmosphere.
Meteorologists also use Doppler radar to help track and predict weather systems. Doppler radar is a specialized radar system that can detect precipitation and measure the motion of small particles in the atmosphere. By analyzing this movement, meteorologists can estimate wind speed and direction, which is especially useful for monitoring severe storms such as thunderstorms and tornadoes.
Additional information on weather maps is displayed using diagrams and lines that represent patterns in the data. Station models are small diagrams that summarize several weather measurements for a specific location. Weather maps may also include isobars, which are lines connecting places with the same air pressure, and isotherms, which connect places with the same temperature. These lines help meteorologists quickly identify patterns in atmospheric conditions and improve the accuracy of weather forecasts.
